WhatsApp insurance quotes for renewal | Scam or legit?

Recently a new type of scam has started for renewal of OD (Own Damage) insurance for new cars.

Last week my wife got an OD insurance renewal quote on her WhatsApp number for Swift from Kotak. It did not had any customer name, chasis and engine numbers and vehicle registration number.

Today I got similar OD insurance renewal quote on my WhatsApp number for my Fronx which has the correct car model from Kotak. And this also does not have any information of the vehicle.

Currently the insurance is from a different company through the Maruti Suzuki Insurance Broking during the purchase of the new cars.

We did not ask anyone for OD insurance renewal.

Please find the WhatsApp screenshot and the quote.
The quotations ranges from Rs.7,500/- to Rs.10,000/-.

These is not a scam but agents who get information/ database about new car registrations from the RTO. Every year specially a month before renewal I too am bombarded with quotes on What's App and calls regarding the same.

I already have Full DND yet I am getting these promotional unsolicited calls, I report each one whenever I answer them and they are put on a Usage Cap by the operator or the number is permanently disconnected. For What's app too there is an option to report , use it!

Sadly there is no privacy left in this age but Thankfully there is a feature to silence unknown callers on iPhone and also Truecaller which can be used to ones benefit.

This doesn't look like a scram. These are merely insurance agents reaching out to prospects through WhatsApp rather than cold calling. Most probably they might have tried calling you before sending the quotes on WhatsApp. Also, initially, they send you these generalized quotes but once you have a word with them about your current insurance and claim related information along with your requirements, they will come back to you with a more tailor made plan that suits your need. For the last couple of years, these agents have been able to give me better quotes than online portals.

As the business evolves, these agencies are exploring newer options to reach out to the customers. From the end user perspective, this is a win win situation as we get to look at the quotes in detail rather than having to jot down the specifics agents share over call. They would have sourced the database through multiple sources.

But as a caution, it is always good to ask them for their physical address and see if that can be verified. Also, if you are engaging with such agents, make sure that they are from your city rather than from some agency which is not easily accessible to you personally.
